Vietnamese-Americans storm Washington DC to lobby for human rights in Vietnam
About 600-700 Vietnamese-Americans across the nation converged today to Washington DC in order to show the support for the human rights fight in Vietnam
and lobby with the administration and the Congress. This is an historic
day that Vietnamese-American community knows how to display its
political voice. In the petition drive for “STOP EXPANDING TRADE WITH VIETNAM AT THE EXPENSE OF HUMAN RIGHTS” with the online petition service established by the White House, more than 130,000 signatures were garnered in the USA in less than a month.
In response to this overwhelming concern
of human rights abuse in Vietnam, the White House invited the
Vietnamese-American community for a meeting today, which was taken place
at Dwight D. Eisenhower Executive Office Building. The administration
was represented by Thomas Debass, Director for Global Partnerships; Eric Barboriak, Deputy Director in the Office of Mainland Southeast Asia Affairs; Michael H. Posner as Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor.

The lobbying efforts were not taken
place only in Washington DC with the administration that some 200
Vietnamese-Americans were invited, rallies were held outside the White
House and in other cities in the USA like in San Jose, Houston and
Portland. Vietnamese communities in Europe and Canada lend moral support by also holding rallies in Paris and in Canada.
Tomorrow. 600 Vietnamese-Americans will
storm the Congress to lobby with the legislative branch about the human
rights violations in Vietnam and the relation between Vietnam and the
USA.
March 5th may well become a Human Rights day for the Vietnamese communities across the globe because today marks the maturation of the Vietnamese community in the politics of their adoptive countries and know now how to voice their concerns.
